Driver of the day: Mercedes dominates 2026 Australian Grand Prix with 1-2 Finish

Mercedes kicked off Formula 1’s new regulations era in spectacular fashion, with George Russell leading rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli to a commanding 1-2 victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

After fending off an early challenge from the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes pair pulled away to control the race. Leclerc ultimately secured the final podium spot, finishing just ahead of his new teammate Hamilton.

Further down the field, Max Verstappen mounted a strong recovery drive to finish sixth for Red Bull, following a significant crash during qualifying. It was a difficult weekend for McLaren, as reigning world champion Lando Norris could only manage fifth place. His teammate, local hero Oscar Piastri, suffered a disastrous end to his home race weekend, crashing on his way to the grid and being unable to start the race.
