“We have our standard patrol vehicles clearly marked for accountability,” Jimoh explained.
He added, “But once criminals sight them, they go into hiding and reappear after the patrol passes.”
To counter this, the command introduced unmarked vehicles, enabling officers to operate discreetly and catch suspects off guard.
“Using unmarked vehicles gives our operatives the element of surprise. It allows them to approach crime scenes undetected and respond more effectively,” he added.

Jimoh noted that the covert patrol system has been particularly effective against opportunistic crimes targeting motorists, especially those stuck in traffic or dealing with vehicle breakdowns.
In some cases, officers reportedly simulate breakdown scenarios using unmarked vehicles to lure suspects.
“When perpetrators approach what they believe is a vulnerable motorist, our officers move in and arrest them immediately,” he said.

The commissioner expressed confidence in the results of the initiative, stating that many residents can attest to the noticeable decline in traffic-related robberies.
“Traffic robbery has gone to zero in Lagos, and it is because of these unmarked vehicles,” Jimoh asserted.
