The United States embassy in Abuja says it is closed for visa appointments, directing applicants to check their emails for details on rescheduled dates.

The announcement comes a day after the US State Department, in an updated travel advisory, authorised non-emergency government employees and their family members to leave the Abuja embassy due to Nigeria’s security situation.

Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states were added to the “Do not travel” list over risks of terrorism, crime, and kidnapping.

While visa operations at the US consulate general in Lagos will continue, the embassy noted that services are available only for emergencies and by appointment.

Meanwhile, on security concerns, Information Minister Mohammed Idris described it as a “routine precaution guided by internal protocols” that does not reflect the country’s situation.

The Minister urged international partners to engage in “balanced and up-to-date reporting that reflects the progress being made” in the security sector.
