Lagos State is set to launch its own driver’s licence scheme in the coming weeks as part of efforts to enhance road safety, improve traffic management, and streamline the licensing process for drivers.
During a press conference in Ikeja, Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi announced that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is anticipated to approve the initiative soon.

Osiyemi stated that drivers will have the option to choose between the standard federal driver’s licence issued in cooperation with the Federal Road Safety Corps or the newly introduced Lagos licence.
This initiative aims to expedite licence processing and alleviate delays for applicants. He shared that, during the review period, authorities issued a total of 56,876 driver’s licences, which comprised 27,067 new applications and 29,810 renewals, in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the FRSC.

He also mentioned that 1,158 international driving permits were processed within the same timeframe.
Regarding rail transport, Osiyemi stated that the second phase of the Blue Line rail project, linking Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is projected to be completed by the first quarter of 2027 for full commercial use. He highlighted that the first phase of the Blue Line carried 3.5 million passengers in 2025.
Additionally, he revealed that the state government has obtained 24 new train coaches for the Red Line corridor, while progress continues on the planned 68-kilometre Green Line project, which will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone via Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
