Lawyer Femi Falana has condemned the Federal and State Governments for engaging in negotiations with terrorists and bandits instead of prosecuting them according to Nigerian law.

At Amnesty International’s Second Annual General Meeting in Abuja, Falana highlighted that it has become routine for government officials to communicate with insurgents and bandits, resulting in the forgiveness and reintegration of many so-called repentant fighters, some of whom reportedly received financial assistance.

He pointed out that groups like Boko Haram are banned under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, indicating that their members should be prosecuted rather than rewarded or offered amnesty.

Falana emphasized that the law states that it is a serious crime to engage in or facilitate meetings with terrorist organizations.

He also asserted that governors lack the legal power to pardon terrorists or bandits. According to him, individuals arrested for terrorism-related offenses should be prosecuted by the Attorney-General of the Federation, and only after conviction should clemency be considered.

Falana referenced anti-terrorism laws that impose harsh penalties on those who knowingly support or facilitate activities related to terrorist groups.

He cautioned that forgiving terrorists and bandits involved in kidnappings, killings, attacks on schools, and other violent acts could jeopardize justice, public safety, and national security.

He firmly stated that holding these individuals accountable is crucial for the protection of victims and the maintenance of the r ule of law.
