“Encourage Youths to Enlist,” COAS urges parents as South East misses Army recruitment goals

Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has urged community leaders, parents, and guardians in the South East to motivate more young individuals to join the Nigerian Army, expressing concern that the region has repeatedly failed to meet its recruitment targets.

During the passing-out ceremony for 2,989 new recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State, Shaibu noted that the newly established depot aims to increase enlistment from the South East and called on communities to seize this chance.

“The recruitment quota from this region has not been fully exploited, and this should not persist,” he emphasized, stating that military service represents a noble form of patriotism, leadership, and national duty. He urged community leaders, parents, guardians, and elders to support young people in enlisting.

The Army Chief highlighted the various security challenges Nigeria faces—including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, separatist movements, organized crime, and cyber threats—which demand discipline, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment.

He also cautioned personnel about the importance of adhering to the Army’s social media regulations, warning that sharing operational information, military images, sensitive locations, or unverified materials online could lead to disciplinary measures, including dismissal.

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, reiterated the state’s dedication to aiding the Nigerian Army, promising to create a peaceful training environment and enhance collaboration between the military and local communities.
