Nigerian earning ₦60, 000 is better off than Nigerian who japa five years ago — Daniel Bwala

A Nigerian earning ₦60,000 today is in a better position than those who migrated abroad five years ago, according to presidential adviser Daniel Bwala.

During an appearance on The Morayo Show, he highlighted that many Nigerians who relocated in search of better opportunities are now experiencing tough economic conditions, despite having advanced qualifications.

Bwala noted that some Nigerians in the UK are employed in jobs that do not correspond with their education levels. He remarked, “For those of you in Nigeria feeling the pinch, you may actually be in a better situation than those who left five years ago.”

He referred to their circumstances as a form of modern exploitation, pointing out that many degree holders work in care homes and warehouses.

He described the situation as akin to modern slavery, stating that despite earning between £2,600 and £2,800 monthly, a large portion goes toward rent, utilities, transportation, and food, leaving little room for savings. “In the end, what you have is minimal, which often forces individuals to take on multiple jobs,” he explained.

Bwala also emphasized that a Nigerian earning ₦60,000 can benefit from familial support and lower living expenses, unlike many abroad who lack a safety net. Additionally, he defended the social intervention initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mentioning a 50% subsidy on dialysis in federal hospitals and free cesarean sections in public health facilities.

He concluded by stating that the administration aims to enhance healthcare support to include more services and medications as resources improve.
