Brig. Gen. Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has encouraged corps members serving in Kogi State to pursue entrepreneurship and seek opportunities that can establish lasting income streams.

During his visit to the NYSC Kogi State Secretariat, the DG emphasized the importance of taking legitimate opportunities seriously, noting that labor possesses inherent dignity.

“I urge you to recognize market demands, devise solutions, and cultivate various income sources instead of merely depending on your monthly allowances,” he stated.

Using the popular “Akara” business as a reference, Nafiu advised corps members to not underestimate small enterprises that could significantly improve their lives.

He also pointed out that Nigeria’s vast population presents abundant entrepreneurial opportunities, encouraging them to value modest beginnings while remaining focused, innovative, and judicious with their monthly allowances.

The NYSC leader promised to discuss the matter of state allowances with the Kogi State Government and instructed the Kogi State Coordinator to refrain from assigning corps members to private entities that fail to provide accommodation or stipends.

“Corps members should receive mentorship and essential skills at their primary assignment locations instead of facing exploitation,” he asserted.

Nafiu also revealed that the scheme would enhance the welfare of corps members by increasing transportation support to orientation camps, improving food provisions, and upgrading the quality of NYSC kits starting next year.

Additionally, he praised the staff for their hard work and dedication, assuring them that the management would continue to prioritize their welfare while urging them to uphold professionalism in their duties.
