FG redoubles efforts for domestic manufacturing of diagnostic test kits

The Federal Government is amplifying its initiatives to boost the local production of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits, aiming to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system, lessen reliance on imports, and increase access to affordable diagnostic services.

During a strategic review meeting in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, convened with officials from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PIUHC), the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), and Troment Biotechnology Limited to assess the progress of establishing a local manufacturing facility for RDT kits, as well as In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVDs).

Prof. Pate emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to overcoming any challenges hindering the project’s progress, highlighting that local production of diagnostic kits is vital for economic development and national health security.

He called for the prompt processing of the Advance Purchase Guarantee (APG) Agreement and instructed the ministry’s legal and technical teams to work with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, NASENI, and Troment Biotechnology Limited to finalize outstanding legal and administrative matters.

The minister also mandated regular project reviews to ensure timely implementation.

According to Pate, enhancing domestic production of crucial health products is a fundamental element of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He asserted that local manufacturing of diagnostic kits would bolster health security, enable affordable testing access, stimulate industrial growth, and create skilled jobs.

This initiative is part of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, a Federal Government program aimed at boosting the local manufacture of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostic tools, thereby positioning Nigeria as a regional healthcare manufacturing hub.
