NiMet Forecasts Sunshine and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria for Next Three Days

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast, predicting a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, and thunderstorms across the country from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday from Abuja, the agency provided detailed predictions for the nation’s different regions.

Sunday’s Forecast

For Sunday, NiMet anticipated sunny skies with some cloud cover in the northern region. Morning thunderstorms with moderate rain were expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states. Later in the afternoon and evening, similar conditions were forecast for Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states.

In the North Central region, morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall were predicted for Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. These conditions were expected to persist into the afternoon and evening, also affecting Kogi and Benue states.

The southern region was forecast to experience moderate morning rainfall in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa. By the afternoon, moderate rainfall was expected across the entire southern zone.

Monday’s Outlook

On Monday, the northern region is expected to see morning thunderstorms with moderate rain in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. Later in the day, thunderstorms are predicted for Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa states.

The North Central region is likely to experience morning thunderstorms in Niger, Kwara, and the FCT, with thunderstorms and moderate rain anticipated across the entire region by the afternoon or evening.

For the South, light morning rains are probable in parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Rivers states, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the region later in the day.

Tuesday’s Projections

Looking ahead to Tuesday, NiMet anticipates partly cloudy skies over the northern region, with a chance of light morning thunderstorms in Bauchi, Jigawa, and Yobe states. Moderate thunderstorms are expected across the region in the afternoon and evening.

The North Central region is forecast to have sunny skies with some clouds in the morning, giving way to thunderstorms and moderate rain across the area in the afternoon and evening.

A cloudy atmosphere is expected in the southern region, with chances of light morning rain in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are predicted for the entire region later in the day.

Public Safety Advisory

NiMet has urged the public to take necessary precautions, noting that strong winds may precede thunderstorms. The agency advised securing loose objects to prevent them from being blown about.

“The expected continuous rains over the coastal areas of the South have good prospects of flash flooding. Avoid driving or wading through floodwaters,” the agency warned, also advising against driving during heavy rain.

Further safety measures include disconnecting electrical appliances, staying clear of tall trees to avoid injury from falling branches, and for airline operators to obtain specific airport weather reports from NiMet for operational planning.
