“Breastfeeding does not cause your breasts to sag” — Health expert dispels common misconception

Health experts are advising mothers not to withhold breast milk from their babies due to the false belief that breastfeeding leads to sagging breasts. They emphasize that breast sagging is a natural part of aging.

This advice was shared on Monday during the launch of 2026 World Breastfeeding Week in Bauchi.

At a press conference, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, noted that some women refrain from breastfeeding because they think it makes them appear older.

“Breastfeeding does not cause your breasts to sag. Breasts will naturally sag with age regardless of whether you breastfeed or not,” Mohammed explained.

He cautioned that denying babies exclusive breastfeeding increases their chances of malnutrition and other avoidable illnesses.

Additionally, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, emphasized that breastfeeding is a vital, life-saving practice. She pointed out that this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” calls attention to the need to enhance effective child nutrition strategies.

She encouraged mothers to start breastfeeding immediately after birth, refrain from giving babies water, honey, or local drinks, and continue breastfeeding along with complementary foods for up to two years, while highlighting the importance of support from families, employers, and the government for nursing mothers.
