2027 Election: Anglican leader advises Nigerian youth against political violence

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, is urging Nigerian youth to steer clear of political violence as the 2027 general elections approach. He highlighted that politicians often put other people’s children in harm’s way while keeping their own safe.

During his remarks at the opening of the 15th Anglican Chancellors, Registrars, and Legal Officers Conference (ACRLOC) in Abuja on Tuesday, Ndukuba stated, “Never act as a thug for any politician because they won’t ask their own kids to do what they’re asking our young people to do. They lure them with money for drugs. We want our youth to reject any form of thuggery and violence.”

He also called on Christians to engage more actively in politics by registering with political parties, getting their membership cards, and participating in the selection of party candidates.

He believes that Nigeria can’t have trustworthy elections without fostering true democracy within its political parties. He cautioned against the dangers of godfatherism, financial influence in politics, and the imposition of candidates, stating that fairness in party leadership is crucial for ensuring elections are free and fair.

Ndukuba encouraged politicians to prioritize campaigns based on issues instead of resorting to violence, emphasizing that elections shouldn’t be viewed as a life-or-death situation. He mentioned that campaigns focused on policies and ideas would empower citizens to hold their elected officials accountable.

The Anglican leader also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security forces, and all Nigerians to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. He expressed hope that having state policing could enhance election security.
