Joint security forces rescue 308 kidnapped  individuals in Kwara and Niger

In one of the largest rescue operations in recent months, a coordinated effort led by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) successfully freed 308 individuals who had been kidnapped in Kwara and Niger states.

The operation took place on Wednesday and involved a collaborative effort among the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) under ONSA, the Nigeria Police Force, and several other security agencies.

According to security sources, the rescue was the result of comprehensive intelligence gathering and meticulous inter-agency planning, allowing for the safe recovery of all 308 victims without any loss of life reported among those rescued.

Sources indicated that 163 of the victims were released after being abducted from the Woro Community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while an additional 145 individuals were rescued during operations in neighboring Niger State.

The rescue missions were strategically coordinated to prevent the kidnappers from relocating their hostages or escaping via forest routes and state borders frequently used by criminal gangs in the North-Central region.

While specific operational details were kept confidential for strategic purposes, officials noted that the success of the rescue was a direct result of sustained intelligence-led efforts under a unified command from ONSA.

Security experts have previously cautioned that kidnapping syndicates in the North-Central region exploit vast forests and weak state borders to dodge security forces. However, this latest operation is perceived as a significant testament to the efficacy of intelligence sharing and collaborative planning among Nigeria’s security agencies.

Post-rescue, all 308 individuals were taken to the Military Medical Facility at Wawa Cantonment in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State, where they will receive medical care, health evaluations, and humanitarian assistance.

Officials reported that the victims will also go through documentation and security debriefing before being reunited with their families after post-rescue protocols are followed.

Security sources stressed that the operation was a result of ongoing collaboration rather than a one-time tactical strike, highlighting the importance of intelligence gathering, strategic planning, and synchronised deployment in achieving the mission’s success.

Additionally, the operation is expected to yield valuable intelligence that may lead to further raids against the criminal networks responsible for these mass abductions, as security agencies increase their efforts to dismantle kidnapping syndicates and enhance the fight against organized violent crime throughout the country.
