Former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) has cautioned the U.S. against disclosing documents related to past drug trafficking investigations involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that it could interfere with Nigeria’s internal matters and impact the upcoming 2027 elections.
In a paper titled “Nigeria First: A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity – A Patriotic and Non-Partisan Perspective,” shared on his verified Facebook page, Buratai emphasized that this issue transcends Tinubu, as it affects the reputation, sovereignty, and political stability of the entire nation.

“This is not just about Bola Tinubu; it concerns 250 million Nigerians, whose national pride, economic futures, and standing in the world are at stake,” he stated.
He questioned the motive behind revisiting events from approximately 33 years ago, especially if it serves political aims before the elections. Buratai argued that Nigeria’s democratic and legal systems should address any allegations against its leaders.
