The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media that its officers used tear gas on members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Lagos State Council, during their peaceful protest outside the Lagos State House of Assembly on August 31, 2026.
The police categorically stated that these allegations are false and misleading, and affirmed that no tear gas was deployed during the event.

In a press release signed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi and sent to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), it was noted that around 500 NUP members, under the leadership of Chairman Comrade Michael Omishade and NLC Chairperson Comrade Agnes Funmi Sesse, protested peacefully at the Lagos State Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja.
The police explained that in line with their duty to maintain order and ensure the safety of both protesters and the public, personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Taskforce, and Eko Strike Force were dispatched to manage the situation, overseen by the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations.
During the protest, the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tayo Akinmade Ayinde, addressed the protesters, after which NUP officials met indoors for about three hours. The group ultimately dispersed peacefully around 4:30 PM without any disturbances reported.
