DG Lagos State sports commission connects with mother from viral video about daughter’s challenge

In response to a viral video featuring a mother expressing significant frustration over how local government officials prevented her young daughter, a representative of Lagos in sports, from taking part in an important sporting event, the Lagos State Sports Commission’s Director General, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, met with the woman and her daughter this morning to fully grasp the situation and provide immediate assistance.

The mother recognized the Lagos State Sports Commission as a steadfast supporter of her daughter’s and other young athletes’ aspirations, but she urged the Commission to do more to educate other government agencies to avoid hindering the dreams of young people, particularly girls, or becoming obstacles to their success.

In his comments, Fatodu promised the mother that he would promptly engage with the relevant government body involved in her daughter’s case to prevent similar issues in the future.

He also outlined both mid-term and long-term strategies that would involve establishing a strong policy framework to address such incidents, enhancing communication between the Commission and the parents of young athletes, and raising awareness among government agencies to safeguard emerging talents.

Fatodu emphasized, “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision is to identify and nurture young talents in Lagos to reach their full potential. Therefore, any action taken by individuals or organizations that undermines this important goal of empowering youth through sports is a significant disservice to talent development efforts.”
