Lagos govt sentences 53-year-old woman to prison for dumping refuse into drainage

A 53-year-old woman named Nelly Monday has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping trash into a drainage system in Lagos during rainfall. She was apprehended in Meiran on September 9, 2026, while improperly disposing of waste in a drain.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) announced this development in a statement on Thursday, noting that Monday was brought before the Magistrate Court at Bolade, Oshodi, where she admitted guilt.

LAWMA stated, “Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for dumping waste in the drains during rain, has been convicted.” Following her guilty plea, she received a one-month prison sentence.

The Authority cautioned residents against improper waste disposal, particularly in drainage systems and unauthorized areas, labeling these actions as environmental violations subject to legal penalties.

“The Authority will continue collaborating with essential enforcement bodies to identify and punish environmental offenders across Lagos,” LAWMA remarked, urging residents to responsibly dispose of their waste through designated channels.

This conviction aligns with ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies to address improper waste disposal, which can obstruct drainage systems and lead to flooding.
