NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) 2027

Applications for the 2027 intake of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) are now open.

The recruitment process is designed to identify your inherent strengths and potential, focusing on your passion for becoming a future leader within the NHS rather than your specific academic background or prior work experience.

Stage 1: Future Potential Assessment (Online)

The first step is an online assessment that takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, though it is not timed. This stage introduces you to the type of work involved in the scheme. You will have the chance to practice each question format before beginning the official assessment. It is advisable to apply early to allow ample time for completion. All participants will receive a detailed feedback report, and successful candidates will advance to the next stage.

Stage 2: NHS GMTS Alignment Assessment

 

Upon successfully completing Stage 1, you will be invited to the Alignment Assessment. This stage, which takes about 60 minutes, includes video responses designed to give you an opportunity to showcase your personality and motivations. While most of the assessment is untimed, the video questions have a time limit, but you will be given sufficient time to prepare your answers. Practice questions are also available for this stage.

Please note that all video submissions are reviewed manually by our team; we do not use artificial intelligence in this part of the process. We ask for your patience as we carefully evaluate each response. Successful applicants will be invited to a Virtual Assessment Centre (VAC), which will be held from January to February 2027.

 

Stage 3: Virtual Assessment Centre (VAC)

 

The final assessment is a half-day Virtual Assessment Centre. During the VAC, you will participate in several engaging exercises and have the opportunity to meet members of the NHS team and other candidates. The goal is for you to be yourself and enjoy the experience. A feedback report will be provided to all participants, regardless of the outcome.Outcomes and Placement

Following the VAC, you will receive one of three outcomes: an immediate offer, a place on the reserve list, or an unsuccessful notification. For those who receive an offer, the next step is the allocation process, where we match successful candidates to available placements within NHS organisations.

This matching is based on your assessment scores and stated preferences, and we strive to find the closest possible placement for you.

 

Offer and Onboarding

 

Candidates who pass the VAC and are successfully matched with a placement will receive a formal offer to join the scheme. We will then initiate pre-employment checks and the onboarding process to ensure you are ready to start on the first Monday of September 2027.

Preparation and Support

As you progress through each stage, preparation materials will become available in your online account. These include practice tests, hints and tips videos, coaching calls, and platform familiarisation guides. While not mandatory, we encourage you to use these resources to prepare and to test your equipment and internet connection.

Entry Requirements and Eligibility

The scheme is open to current NHS employees, who are referred to as ‘in-service’ trainees. We are committed to ensuring a fair and equitable assessment for all candidates.

Application Timeline for Future GraduatesStudents who are still completing their degrees are welcome to apply now, provided they meet all other entry requirements.

 

To be eligible, you must have your final, confirmed degree classification of a 2:2 or higher by mid-August 2027. Successful applicants will officially join the scheme on the first Monday of September 2027.
