The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested 14 persons for alleged waste-related offences and seized scores of carts used for unauthorised waste collection in separate enforcement operations across Lagos.
The arrests were made in areas including Idumota, Oke-Popo, Tom Jones and Tinubu on Lagos Island, where the suspects were allegedly involved in improper waste disposal, including dumping waste into the lagoon.

LAWMA also carried out an enforcement operation from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, where scores of carts used by suspected illegal waste collectors were seized.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operations were part of efforts to strengthen compliance with waste management regulations and curb illegal dumping and unauthorised waste collection.

Gbadegesin warned that dumping waste in waterways and other unauthorised locations could undermine Lagos’ environmental sustainability efforts.
He urged residents, traders and businesses to patronise accredited waste collectors and dispose of waste through approved channels, warning that violators would face appropriate enforcement action.
