A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, was reportedly killed after being struck by a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos.
The driver, 20-year-old Olumide Olusola, allegedly ran over Sergeant Okediji on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as he was approached by the officer.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, explained that while officers signaled for Olusola’s Lexus ES 350 to stop, the driver initially complied but then accelerated away. Despite multiple attempts by police and bystanders to intervene, Olusola knocked down Sergeant Okediji, dragging him several meters beneath the car.

The driver was eventually apprehended, but Sergeant Okediji suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and a traumatic head injury. He was taken to a local hospital and later referred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he was sadly declared dead upon arrival.

CP Fatai mentioned that Okediji’s body has been sent to the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, and the vehicle has been secured at the station.
In a brief statement, Olusola claimed that his brakes had failed and insisted he did not intend to harm the officer.
