The industrial action was called by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). According to an official directive issued by the union, the stay-at-home order took effect on Monday and will persist until platform operators address their grievances and offer tangible resolutions.

AUATON stated that the walkout became necessary after repeated engagements failed to resolve fundamental issues surrounding driver safety, operating policies, and the overall economic sustainability of app-based transportation in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

“Despite repeated efforts by drivers and stakeholders to draw attention to these concerns, many of the issues remain unresolved,” the union said, noting that the strike aims to compel platforms to overhaul current operating terms.

To ease the financial burden on participating drivers, the union urged car owners and fleet managers to freeze daily remittance quotas and waive performance targets for the duration of the boycott.

“During the industrial action, drivers will not be generating their normal revenue from which daily remittance obligations ordinarily arise,” the notice explained. “We, therefore, appeal to fleet partners to refrain from imposing penalties, sanctions or adverse measures solely on the basis of a driver’s participation in the action, as drivers are not expected to operate during this period.”

To ensure strict adherence to the directive, AUATON confirmed it is deploying task force teams across all local government areas in Lagos. Drivers caught flouting the collective decision risk facing disciplinary penalties under internal union guidelines.

Despite the disruption, the union maintained that its objective is not to destabilise the mobility sector but to establish a fairer operational model. AUATON argued that fair compensation and better working terms would directly boost driver retention, minimize vehicle maintenance lapses, and foster a more dependable transport ecosystem.

The strike notice was officially signed by the union’s Lagos State Chairman, Jaiyesimi Olalabi Azeez—widely known as Makavelli—who reiterated the union’s commitment to peaceful, constructive dialogue with fleet partners and platform companies to secure an enduring resolution.
