Who is Diogo Jota?

The football world was plunged into mourning on July 3, 2025, with the tragic news of the passing of Portuguese international and Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, at the age of 28.

Jota, along with his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva, died in a devastating car crash in Cernadilla, Spain.

Born Diogo José Teixeira da Silva on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, Jota quickly rose through the ranks of professional football, known for his relentless work rate, sharp finishing, pace, and versatility as a forward or winger.

His career saw him play for Paços de Ferreira before a move to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He then had successful loan spells at FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, eventually joining Wolves permanently in 2018.

In September 2020, Jota made a big move to Liverpool for a reported £41 million, where he quickly became a vital part of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking force.

During his five seasons at Anfield, he made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and providing 22 assists. He played a key role in Liverpool’s successes, including winning the Premier League title in the 2024-2025 season, an FA Cup, and two EFL Cups.

On the international stage, Jota was a proud representative of Portugal, earning 49 caps and scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squads for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championships (2020 and 2024), and notably won the UEFA Nations League with his country in both 2019 and 2025.

The tragic accident occurred on the A-52 motorway in the province of Zamora, Spain.
