AFCON2025 : Nigeria down Carthage Eagles to advance to round of 16

Ademola Lookman stars again for Nigeria in Fes. 

Nigeria senior National team, the Super Eagles, became yet another team at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to book a spot in the knockouts.

The landmark was confirmed in the after math of a 3-2 gritty victory over 2004 winners and North African opposition, Tunisia on Saturday night in Fes.

Player of the match Ademola Lookman, captain Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Osimhen were target for the Eagles while Montassar Talbi and Ali Abdi grabbed the goals for Tunisia.

A late comeback in the second half from Tunisia didn’t materialise as Chelle’s troops made it two wins in as many games at the ongoing continental showpiece.

Initially, Nigeria had commenced their campaign on a positive note, beat Tanzania 2-1 at the same venue thanks to goals from Ajayi and Ademola Lookman.

They head into their final group game against East African representatives, Uganda in high spirits already assured of playing in the round of 16.

Record holders, Egypt were the first team in Morocco to reach the knockout phase when they narrowly pipped Bafana Bafana of South Africa 1-0 on Friday evening.
