Bauchi poly issues ‘instant marriage’ policy for students seen together during Ramadan

The management of Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi has ignited significant debate after announcing a rule that bans male and female students from being “together as couples” on campus during Ramadan.

In a notice dated February 25, 2026, and signed by Registrar and Council Secretary Alhaji Kamisu Salihu, the institution warned that students who violate this directive could face an immediate arranged Nikkah (Islamic marriage).

The notice urged adherence to the Polytechnic’s values and cautioned against unnecessary proximity, mentioning that any couples involved in such a marriage would be responsible for their own Walima (wedding feast).

The policy has faced intense criticism on social media, with many accusing the federal institution of enforcing religious rules in a setting that is meant to be secular.
