Former Super Eagles striker and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, Brown Ideye has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that spanned over a decade across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Ideye, who was part of Nigeria’s golden AFCON-winning squad in South Africa under the late Stephen Keshi, confirmed the decision in a heartfelt statement on his social media pages.

“After much thought and consideration with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” he wrote.
“I will first like to thank God for the talent and the long career I’ve enjoyed. I thank my family and friends for their unwavering love, support, and understanding till this day.
“This game made me and gave me everything — incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories.”

The former Dynamo Kyiv and West Bromwich Albion forward went on to appreciate agents, coaches, teammates, journalists, fans, and the Nigeria Football Federation for their role in his journey.
He said, “Thank you, Nigeria, for the opportunity you gave me to wear the national colours and be among the Super Eagles.”
Ideye earned over 30 caps for Nigeria, scoring important goals and playing a key role in the country’s third AFCON triumph in 2013.
At club level, he enjoyed spells in Switzerland, France, Ukraine, England, Greece, China, Spain, and Turkey, establishing himself as a reliable striker known for his strength and finishing ability.

Although stepping away from the professional stage, Ideye made it clear that football will remain part of his life.
“Though my time as a pro-player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter. Thank you all for being a part of this journey and I look forward to still seeing you on these football streets.”
