How to obtain Tax ID for Individuals using your National Identification Number (NIN)

Nigeria on Thursday, January 1, 2026, formally began implementing a new set of tax laws and fiscal reforms, a move that has generated widespread public concern despite repeated assurances from the federal government that the measures are intended to strengthen the economy rather than impose additional hardship on citizens.

The rollout followed through on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration in June 2025 that the reforms would take effect at the start of 2026, even in the face of mounting opposition and calls for postponement.

Here is how to get Tax ID

1. Visit taxid.firs.gov.ng.
2. On the homepage, click “Individual”.
3. From the Tax ID Retrieval Method dropdown, select NIN, then enter your NIN.

4. Click “Retrieve Tax ID.” A pop-up box will appear requesting your details.
5. Enter your first name, last name, and date of birth, then tick the checkbox to consent to the use of your information for identity verification.
6. Click “Submit.”7. A confirmation message will appear stating that your NIN has been successfully verified and matched to a Tax ID in the system, and your Tax ID will be displayed.
