This decision was made following a motion presented by Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara (Surulere II), Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, during a plenary session led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Hon. Sangodara highlighted that numerous students in Lagos deal with psychological and behavioral issues such as peer pressure, stress, truancy, and substance abuse, emphasizing that adequate counselling services can help shape character, guide career paths, and enhance mental well-being.
In support of the motion, Hon. Sa’ad Lukman Olumoh urged higher education institutions and the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) to focus on training and hiring qualified counsellors.
Hon. Kehinde Joseph and Abiodun Tobun pointed out that this initiative would promote moral values and discipline, while Hon. Musbau Aina advocated for the reestablishment of youth groups like the Boys’ Scouts and Girls’ Brigade to further enhance leadership and moral growth among students.
The lawmakers concurred that effective counselling services are essential for fostering the emotional, social, and academic health of students throughout Lagos.
