“Lagos is not just a city; it is a symbol of possibility for Nigerian youth,” the Governor declared. “Our bid to host the National Youth Games goes beyond securing the rights to hold the event; it is about creating a future where every young Nigerian can dream, compete, and shine.”

The National Youth Games has become the country’s premier platform for discovering and nurturing young athletes from across Nigeria. It serves not only as a talent identification opportunity but also as a melting pot of culture, unity, and national pride. Hosting such an event is not just a ceremonial honour; it is a significant responsibility that Lagos believes it is fully prepared to handle.

The bid document was presented to the National Sports Commission in Abuja by a high-powered delegation led by Hon. Lekan Fatodu, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC). Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, received the bid and acknowledged Lagos’ strong track record in sports development and logistics.

Other members of the Lagos delegation included Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih, Director of Sports at LSSC; Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Director of School Sports; and Mr. Dare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports. Together, they presented a vision focused on excellence, youth inclusion, and innovation.

The delegation highlighted Lagos’ “commendable legacy of successfully hosting national and international sporting events,” supported by its modern infrastructure and logistical capabilities. Key venues mentioned included Teslim Balogun Stadium, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, and Rowe Park, facilities with the capacity to accommodate thousands of athletes, officials, and spectators. The state also features an efficient transport network, a variety of accommodation options, and a vibrant cultural scene, all of which create the ideal setting for a youth-centred national event.

In the most recent edition of the games, held in 2024, Delta State emerged as the overall winner with 111 medals, including 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze, solidifying its status as a sports stronghold. However, Lagos is determined to raise the bar even higher, promising a festival of sports that will create lasting memories and legacies.

At its core, Lagos’ bid is not just about sports; it’s about purpose. It aims to provide Nigerian youth with a platform to explore their abilities, connect with peers from different regions, and discover the values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
