This will be only the sixth senior international meeting between Nigeria and Mozambique, as both teams vie for a place in the last eight of the 35th edition of the tournament, currently being held in Morocco.
The crucial knockout match is scheduled for Monday, 5 January, at 8 p.m. local time. It will be played at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, a 35,000-seat stadium that has been Nigeria’s base throughout their successful Group C run.
Road to the Round of 16
Nigeria stormed through the group stage, securing a perfect record with three wins from three matches. The Super Eagles showcased their attacking prowess by scoring eight goals while conceding four.
Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika have led the charge with two goals each, supported by strikes from Semi Ajayi, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Paul Onuachu.
Perfect ending to the group stage!

In contrast, Mozambique’s path to the knockout rounds has been more challenging. They began with a loss to defending champions Ivory Coast but bounced back with a remarkable victory over Gabon. Despite a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in their final group game, their overall performance was strong enough to secure qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
Nigeria vs. Mozambique head to head
Monday’s game is fraught with tension. The young Mambas have proven they can compete with Africa’s football giants and have shown a knack for getting results when their backs are against the wall.
However, history is firmly on Nigeria’s side. The Super Eagles have won four of their five previous encounters. Their only prior AFCON meeting was a decisive 3-0 victory for Nigeria in Lubango, Angola, back in January 2010.
Other past results include a 1-0 friendly win for Nigeria in Maputo in 1999 and a 3-2 victory in another friendly in Portugal in October 2023. During the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, the teams drew 0-0 in Maputo before Nigeria secured a dramatic 1-0 win in Abuja, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Obinna Nsofor that kept their World Cup hopes alive.
As the tournament enters its knockout phase, the Super Eagles face a formidable test against an underdog opponent that has already caused problems for several top teams.
