OAU student, David, should have demanded N50M instead of N15M for false rape accusation — TVC presenter Riyah

TVC presenter Riyah Abdul has commented on the situation concerning David, a student from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), who is suing a female peer for N15 million after she wrongly accused him of raping her.

In a televised discussion, Abdul asserted that the compensation amount should be raised to N50 million, as the current figure is inadequate to truly address the damages caused by such serious allegations.

She emphasized that false accusations can ruin a person’s reputation permanently and indicated that simple apologies do not suffice in these serious matters.

Abdul pointed out that if the accuser had not publicly retracted her statement, David could have continued to be labeled as a rapist. She articulated that the damage done to someone’s image is not something that can simply be forgiven, and noted that false claims undermine legitimate cases of sexual assault.

Speaking candidly, Abdul expressed her frustration with women who falsely accuse men of crimes, particularly serious ones like rape, considering the emotional and reputational harm these claims can inflict.

She called for stringent repercussions for false accusations, insisting that severe penalties are necessary to deter similar incidents in the future, and emphasized that financial restitution should be mandatory, not optional.
