Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has spoken out following an alleged assassination attempt on his convoy in Edo State on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at the residence of former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, where gunmen reportedly opened fire. The attack left the property’s gate and several vehicles riddled with bullets.

In a video that surfaced online after the event, Obi condemned the violence. “This is where our democracy has reached,” he stated. “A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting.”
Obi added, “I assure you this cannot continue; we have a country, and we are a part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising the citizens.”

The attack reportedly took place shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political figures attended the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City.
Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, claimed the assailants trailed the group from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence before launching the attack. He described the incident as a “failed assassination attempt” targeting the political leaders present.
Footage from the scene showed significant damage, with visible bullet holes on the estate gate and several vehicles, highlighting the intensity of the assault.
