Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, officially launched a series of electrification initiatives in Badagry’s border communities on Wednesday, aiming to address the persistent electricity issues in the region.
The initiatives encompass three HC Tower Crossings, upgraded 33KV distribution lines along the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa routes, and the connection of 51 transformer substations. These efforts are designed to improve the power supply for both residents and businesses in the affected communities. Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, stated that these projects signify a targeted action by the state government to alleviate the electricity shortages that have plagued the Badagry area for years.

Sanwo-Olu clarified that this intervention aligns with the state government’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly its focus on expanding energy access and developing resilient infrastructure that fosters economic growth throughout the state.

He also pointed out that the establishment of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission will facilitate better regulation and expansion of electricity supply, ensuring that infrastructure investments yield lasting advantages for residents.
The governor remarked that the electrification projects would enhance power distribution along the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa routes, benefiting thousands of households, shops, and businesses with improved and more reliable electricity.
He noted that the better power supply would enable traders to extend their operating hours, allow artisans and small manufacturers to boost productivity, and assist schools and healthcare facilities in functioning more effectively.
Sanwo-Olu further emphasized the economic significance of Badagry, labeling it a historic town that serves as a crucial gateway linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin and the broader West African region. “As a border corridor connecting Nigeria to the Republic of Benin and West Africa, Badagry has immense potential for trade and cross-border enterprise,” he remarked.
He congratulated the residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa, and nearby communities, encouraging them to take pride in and protect the infrastructure from vandalism.
Additionally, Sabur Oluwa, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, praised the projects as a testament to the state government’s dedication to developing sustainable infrastructure.
He mentioned that the enhanced power infrastructure would boost economic activities, improve security, and significantly elevate the living standards of residents.
Earlier, Biodun Ogunleye, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, pointed out that these electrification projects were initiated to resolve long-standing power challenges in the communities, assuring residents that the new infrastructure would improve electricity access, enhance distribution capacity, and elevate the quality of life for households and businesses.
Likewise, Abiola Olowu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, stated that this achievement demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s commitment to providing essential power infrastructure that supports sustainable socio-economic growth across the state.
