Students escape as 4-storey school building collapses in Lagos

Panic erupted in the Ogba area of Lagos on Monday after a four-storey building housing Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College suddenly collapsed as students escape.

The incident occurred around noon at 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda area of Ogba. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as students and staff had been evacuated just minutes before the structure gave way.

Timely Evacuation Prevents Tragedy

Witnesses said the building collapsed less than three minutes after the premises were cleared, preventing what could have been a devastating disaster.

According to eyewitness accounts, unusual cracking sounds were heard before the structure caved in, sending debris across the surrounding area.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), quickly arrived at the scene to secure the site and assess the damage.

Authorities say the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, though early indications suggest structural weaknesses may have contributed to the incident.

School officials and residents described the narrow escape as nothing short of miraculous.

A school official who requested anonymity explained that early warning signs prompted the swift evacuation.

ā€œIt was a miracle. We noticed unusual vibrations and immediately got everyone out. Seconds later, the whole thing came down,ā€ the official said.

Parents who rushed to the scene were seen embracing their children, relieved that no lives were lost.
