President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, effective immediately. The appointment follows the President’s acceptance of the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down from the role for personal reasons.

🔗 Join Our ChannelEgbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, submitted his resignation on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations. His tenure was originally set to conclude in June 2027, in accordance with the amended Police Act.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged receiving the resignation letter and expressed his gratitude for Egbetokun’s service.
The President commended Egbetokun for his “decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,” praising his “dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure.”

The statement confirmed the new appointment, noting the decision was made in response to the nation’s current security challenges and in line with existing laws. “President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” it read.
Confidence was expressed in the new acting head’s capabilities. “The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement continued.

In adherence to the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector-General. Following this, his nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to improving national security and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains a professional and accountable institution capable of fulfilling its constitutional duties.
