University Of Abuja expels 28 students, withdraws certificates of 15 former students

The Senate of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has decided to expel 28 students and revoke the certificates of 15 former students due to a range of disciplinary issues.

According to a statement from Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of the University’s Information Directorate, this decision was made during the 191st Regular Meeting of the Senate after reviewing the Student Disciplinary Committee’s report.

The students expelled faced charges such as threats to life, assault, exam malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, involvement in cult activities, drug-related offenses, falsification of ‘O’ Level results, and not attending disciplinary hearings despite multiple invitations.

Additionally, the Senate has withdrawn the certificates of 15 former students who ignored repeated invitations from the Committee. Nine students were cleared of any wrongdoing following investigations, while 33 others were issued warnings for various offenses, including conspiracy, hostel misconduct, and fighting.

Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate, emphasized the university’s dedication to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment, asserting the institution’s intention to maintain discipline and strictly enforce its rules.
