2027 Elections: Obi, Aregbesola, Kwankwaso, thousands of Nigerians rally in #OccupyINEC protest

On Wednesday, a significant number of demonstrators gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, braving persistent rain to call for electoral transparency as tensions rise ahead of the 2027 elections.

What started as a protest organized by a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) quickly evolved into a larger movement. Individuals from various political parties and groups joined forces, transforming the event into a widespread rally aimed at protecting democracy and scrutinizing the integrity of the electoral process.

Protester Muyideen Bashiru noted that the turnout reflected widespread concern across party lines, with attendees traveling from all corners of the country.

“We’re on our way to the INEC office, and you can see the masses; there are hundreds, possibly thousands, gathered here,” Bashiru remarked.

Notable figures attending included David Mark, former Senate President; Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State and ex-Minister of Interior; Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate; Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement; and Dino Melaye, among others.

The rally began at the residence of David Mark, who was celebrating his 78th birthday with a morning service, before the contingent moved out in an organized march.

β€œThis is huge; it’s not just about the ADC, but members from various political parties are present,” Bashiru stated. β€œYou might recall this protest was initially scheduled for last week but was postponed. Today feels different; it seems spontaneous, almost catching security forces off guard.”

Despite the rain, the crowd continued to swell at the INEC office, creating a charged but orderly environment. β€œYou can see the crowd behind me; it’s still increasing, and the energy here is palpable, ” Bashiru added.
