Gov. Uba Sani distributes 600 transformers across Kaduna

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has asserted that access to electricity should not be confined to select urban areas but rather be ensured for all communities.

He made this statement during the launch of Phase One of a campaign to distribute 600 transformers and related equipment across all 23 local government areas in the state. The event also marked the introduction of 10,000 solar-powered streetlights.

Sani emphasized that electricity is essential for modern society, not a luxury, and noted that this initiative would enable welders, tailors, cold-room operators, ICT centers, and manufacturers to operate more effectively. He highlighted that the government’s electrification plan aims to boost economic activities and support small and medium enterprises.

The governor pointed out that a reliable power supply strengthens vital sectors by powering hospitals, preserving vaccines, illuminating classrooms, propelling industries, supporting irrigation, and sustaining small businesses. He cautioned that a lack of dependable electricity could hinder development, compromise security, and limit opportunities.

Since taking office nearly three years ago, Sani shared that his administration has revitalized stalled projects and introduced new initiatives.

He mentioned the completion of solar mini-grids at 190 of 225 primary healthcare centers under a previously delayed Indian-Exim Bank program, which provides 1.35 megawatts of clean energy. Additionally, 32 neglected systems (21 in primary healthcare centers and 11 in general hospitals) were restored, leading to better healthcare services and a decrease in maternal and child mortality.

Sani also announced the completion of a long-awaited 2x60MVA, 132/33kV substation at the Green Economic Zone in Maraban Jos, calling it a strategic investment that will attract businesses and bolster manufacturing, enhancing Kaduna’s competitiveness.

In Kubau LGA, he detailed that the 100-kilowatt Damau solar project has restored electricity to 450 households after a decade without power. Other ongoing distributed generation projects, totaling 1,694 kilowatts, are being developed in Chara, Gidan Kundi, Gora, and Hawan Mai Mashi.

The governor outlined various projects implemented across the state’s three senatorial districts and revealed a memorandum of understanding signed on October 22, 2025, with the Rural Electrification Agency. This partnership includes a 1.5-megawatt project for Kaduna Polytechnic and an 8-megawatt allocation for Ahmadu Bello University.

Moreover, he noted the development of urban power projects, which encompass a 2-megawatt initiative in the TRAPCO community, with plans for additional projects of 2 megawatts in Shika and 4 megawatts in Makarfi to bolster local manufacturing.
