Usman Austin, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, has urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to either formally charge former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai or release him without delay.
In a statement released on Saturday, Austin expressed his concerns regarding El-Rufai’s ongoing detention and insisted that the commission must adhere to due process.

Austin argued that allowing the courts to decide on such matters based on arguments from both sides reflects democratic values and respect for civil rights.
He asserted that any allegations against El-Rufai should be addressed in court, emphasizing the necessity of following established legal procedures. He noted that the former governor had previously complied with summons from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and had cooperated with their investigation.
Austin also raised questions about the situation surrounding El-Rufai’s custody, inquiring if he had been formally transferred to the ICPC or re-arrested after being granted administrative bail.
He stated that this lack of clarity leads to concerns about adherence to the rule of law.
Reiterating the significance of transparency, he emphasized that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty and warned anti-corruption agencies against actions that might compromise democratic principles.
“If there is an indictment against him, it should be taken to court. If not, he should be released without delay,” the statement concluded.
Earlier reports indicated that El-Rufai was taken into ICPC custody shortly after his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, where he had been interrogated for several days.
The ICPC later confirmed that the former governor remains in their custody regarding an ongoing investigation and stated he was still with the commission as of February 18, 2026.
