2027: Lagos group demands indigenous governorship candidacy for next election

In 2027, a coalition named Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has urged the All Progressives Congress to designate the governorship candidacy for Lagos State to qualified indigenous individuals. They emphasize the importance of fairness, justice, and inclusivity in the political framework of the state.

This request was made during a technical committee meeting on March 18, 2026, where the group also expressed its support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

A statement released after the meeting, signed by the convener Adesunbo Onitiri, highlighted that the positions of Deputy Governor and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly should also be reserved for indigenes in 2027. The rationale behind this demand is to promote equity, maintain indigenous identity, and enhance stakeholder collaboration in Lagos governance.

The group set forth specific criteria for those aspiring to the proposed positions, requiring that candidates must be genuine indigenes of Lagos with verified ancestral ties, possess strong educational and professional qualifications, and demonstrate experience in governance, leadership, or business.

Additionally, aspirants must have a clean record, free from corruption or criminal charges, and exhibit traits such as discipline, integrity, and exemplary behavior. They should also provide verifiable accomplishments both within and outside Lagos State and show dedication to family values and social responsibilities, along with the capacity for independent yet collaborative leadership aimed at transformation.

The group concluded by stating its intention to engage positively with all qualified candidates in the months leading up to the 2027 general elections, with the goal of identifying and supporting those who are best equipped to shape the future of  Lagos State.
