As Christians worldwide commemorated Palm Sunday, marking Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the nation’s leaders to demonstrate empathy and alleviate the burdens faced by its citizens.
The prominent Christian organization highlighted that Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem was not a display of power but a message of peace, purpose, and hope. It noted that in a tense environment, Jesus chose humility by riding on a colt rather than with the grand symbols of authority.

“That choice still speaks to us today,” CAN stated in a message signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.
The statement addressed the growing economic pressures on the populace. “Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times. The cost of living is rising. For countless families, daily life is getting harder,” it read. “Events far beyond our borders, especially tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, are unsettling global energy markets. The impact is already here. Fuel is more expensive.”

CAN further observed the ripple effect of these global issues on local life, noting, “Transport costs are rising. Food prices are climbing. In moments like this, the calm and clarity of Palm Sunday matter even more.”
The association emphasized the public’s immediate concerns, stating that for many Nigerians, the focus is on “how to cope, how to plan, how to stay afloat.”
It stressed that in times of uncertainty, the national tone is crucial, as words and actions have significant consequences.

“Palm Sunday reminds us that in tense moments, people need reassurance. They need stability. They need the quiet confidence that those in positions of responsibility understand what they are going through,” the statement continued.
Drawing a parallel to leadership, CAN explained that true leadership is demonstrated through restraint, empathy, and a focus on the common good, rather than through loud pronouncements. It called for decisions that “ease burdens, calm anxieties, and bring people together,” describing the current period as a time for such wisdom.

The organization also described Palm Sunday as a call to responsibility for the Church and all people of faith, urging them to stand for peace, strengthen unity, and support one another.
“In a season that can easily tilt towards tension, we must remain a steady source of light and hope,” it urged.
In a final message to the Nigerian people, particularly the youth and those most affected by the economic strain, CAN offered a word of encouragement: “Do not lose hope. The challenges are real, but they are not the end of the story.”
