U.S can sight terrorists in Nigeria through technology, but we lack the capacity, Presidential media aide says

The U.S. can detect terrorists in Nigeria using advanced technology, but Nigeria lacks the capacity to utilize that technology, according to Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication.

He noted Nigeria’s challenges in tracking armed groups in real time, particularly when large groups of 300-500 individuals on motorcycles approach a village and become nearly undetectable to the Nigerian government, unlike the Americans who can track them.

Bwala pointed out that while Americans can monitor these groups via satellites that Nigeria does not possess, their advantage is also due to their lack of a physical presence on the ground. When asked if Nigeria could potentially acquire such technology, he stated, β€œNo, we don’t have the capacity for that technology.”

He also discussed Nigeria’s drone capabilities, explaining that while the country operates some reconnaissance drones for gathering intelligence, they do not have the strike drones needed to identify and eliminate targets. He highlighted that merely spotting armed groups is insufficient since they are always on the move.

Additionally, Bwala mentioned that financial and logistical challenges hinder Nigeria’s ability to enhance its security budget. He noted that acquiring technology in the international market is not as straightforward as shopping, as certain systems must be sold rather than simply purchased.

Despite these issues, he emphasized the strong ongoing partnership between Nigeria and the United States, indicating that they are working together to improve Nigeria’s security measures through international support.
