“This will increase capacity, shorten wait times, and enhance the overall commuting experience for residents. Our goal remains to build a transport system that is efficient and dependable for all.”
Inaugurated in February 2024, the Red Line is a 37-kilometre rail corridor connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos.
The line serves several key commercial and residential areas, including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, providing a crucial mass transit alternative in some of the city’s most congested zones.
The Red Line was developed as a key component of the Lagos rail master plan and shares the standard gauge track with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
It also features interchange points with the Lagos Blue Line, advancing the state’s vision for an integrated, multimodal transport network.

Since its launch, the rail line has seen a steady rise in ridership, highlighting the public’s demand for faster and more reliable transportation options in a city known for its severe traffic congestion.
This latest development is part of a wider strategy by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to expand rail services and improve connectivity throughout the state.
Future plans include extending the Red Line and further integrating it with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and ferry services.
