MURIC claims religious partiality in N25bn chapel project at Nnamdi Azikiwe airport

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Federal Government of showing favoritism after reports emerged about a proposed N25 billion ecumenical chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

In a statement on Friday, Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, expressed serious concerns over the fairness of how various religious groups are treated, particularly as the project appears to be in partnership with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The organization also criticized what it sees as an unequal allocation of relief funds. They highlighted the N2 billion given to victims of violence in Plateau State, pointing out that similar support was not extended to other affected states like Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kwara.

MURIC questioned the fairness of reports stating that N1.2 billion was distributed among the 19 northern states before the Eid al-Kabir celebration, labeling this amount as disproportionately low in comparison to the funds allocated to Plateau.

“How is it just that one state receives N2 billion while 19 states have to share only N1.2 billion?” the group questioned, expressing concerns about the marginalization of Muslims.

The organization called on the government to clarify its position regarding Muslim religious infrastructure and to ensure equal treatment.

They urged the authorities to announce a national mosque project and guarantee similar financial support if land is designated for it.

MURIC warned that the perceived imbalance in government policies could worsen religious tensions if not addressed promptly.
