According to Lagos Reporters, Abayomi indicated that Lagos currently needs approximately 40,000 doctors to adequately serve its rapidly increasing population, but there are only about 7,000 practicing medical professionals, resulting in a deficit of nearly 30,000 doctors.

He stated that the planned specialized university is part of a larger reform initiative focused on expanding medical education, upgrading healthcare facilities, and ensuring a sufficient number of skilled health workers in the region.

The commissioner emphasized that this initiative is aligned with the state government’s goal of making Lagos a center of excellence in healthcare services, medical research, and innovation within Africa.

The proposed university is expected to enhance the existing medical training institutions in the state and provide more opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals.

This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to enhance healthcare access, combat brain drain in the medical field, and strengthen both emergency and primary healthcare services across the region.
