We will survive insecurity, just like COVID-19 and Ebola, Senate President Akpabio says

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that Nigerians will overcome the current security challenges facing the country, just as they have endured previous crises such as COVID-19 and Ebola.

Speaking during an inter-denominational church service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja for Democracy Day, Akpabio encouraged the nation to remain optimistic, despite the pressing concerns about insecurity. The service, themed β€œGod of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” was held on Sunday.

He remarked that Nigeria has navigated various hardships, such as political instability, economic strife, pandemics, and military rule, while maintaining a democratic government for the past 27 years. “We have faced political upheavals and economic difficulties. We will also overcome insurgencies,” he stated, adding that the country has withstood Ebola, COVID-19, and other national emergencies.

Akpabio acknowledged that insecurity is a significant concern for the nation, noting that this year’s Democracy Day was observed more subdued in response to the ongoing situation.

He pointed out the threats to communities, the fears of farmers unable to work, and the pervasive anxiety among travelers. He also addressed the emotional trauma inflicted by kidnappings, especially those targeting children.

β€œThe kidnapping of innocent citizens, especially children, deeply wounds our nation’s conscience,” he said, recalling how the pain of abducted children resonates with him due to his own childhood experiences during the civil war. He emphasized that such suffering must be acknowledged.

“We will continue to unite, pray, and persevere until our children are brought back safely and our nation is secure,” he concluded.
