According to a recent survey by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), financial issues, rather than a lack of desire, are hindering many young people from marrying and having children.
The Global Demographic Futures Survey, one of the largest conducted, collected feedback from over 108,000 adults aged 18 to 39 in 73 different countries.

The report reveals that more than two-thirds of participants wish to marry or enter a long-term relationship, with nearly 80 percent emphasizing the significance of being in a stable partnership before starting a family.
However, 57 percent indicated that financial insecurity, precarious jobs, and rising housing costs are the main barriers to pursuing marriage and long-term commitments.

UNFPA Executive Director Diene Keita remarked that the results show a persistent sense of hope among young individuals despite their difficulties. She noted that eliminating financial obstacles would enable them to make the appropriate decisions for their lives and create stronger communities.
The survey also highlighted that young people prioritize financial stability, job security, and emotional readiness as essential factors before considering parenthood. A young woman from India expressed that selecting the right partner is crucial, as child-rearing requires shared emotional and financial responsibilities.
UNFPA concluded that discussions around declining birth rates should shift from questioning young people’s desire for family life to focusing on fostering the economic conditions necessary for them to form the families they envision.
