Executive Chairman of Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Dr. Seyi Jakande, has officially declared open the sixth edition of the Chairman’s Cup, describing the annual competition as one of Lagos State’s most impactful grassroots football tournaments that continues to nurture future national team players.

Speaking during the official press conference and draw ceremony for the tournament, Jakande said the Chairman’s Cup has evolved beyond a football competition into a platform for youth empowerment, talent discovery, and community development.
Addressing dignitaries, participating clubs, members of the media and sponsors, Cardinal Sport Promotion Limited, the council chairman welcomed guests and reflected on the tournament’s growing influence.
He said, “It gives me great joy to welcome you all to this press conference and official draw ceremony for the 6th edition of the Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA Chairman’s Cup.
“This tournament has, over the years, become more than just a football competition. It is a celebration of youth, talent, unity, and community spirit. Through the Chairman’s Cup, we have discovered promising footballers, strengthened bonds among our wards and communities, and promoted healthy competition that reflects the true spirit of sportsmanship.”
Jakande assured participating teams and supporters that this year’s edition would be one of the most competitive in the tournament’s history.
According to him, the competition provides young footballers with an opportunity not only to compete for honours but also to attract the attention of scouts.
“Season 6 promises to be even more exciting. The passion of our young athletes, the energy of our supporters, and the commitment of our organizers will ensure thrilling football action and unforgettable moments.
“Today’s draw marks the beginning of the journey to glory for our participating teams, and I urge every player to see this as an opportunity not just to win, but to showcase discipline, teamwork, and resilience.”
The LCDA chairman reserved special appreciation for Cardinal Sport Promotion Limited, acknowledging the company’s consistent support for the tournament.
“I must commend Cardinal Sport Promotion Limited for their steadfast support and partnership. Their sponsorship has been instrumental in sustaining this competition and in giving our youths a platform to shine.”
Jakande revealed that the Chairman’s Cup has grown into a regional football competition, attracting clubs from across Lagos and neighbouring states during the long vacation.
Among the participating clubs this season are Future Stars FC of Ibafo and Lakeside Queens of Ikenne, while Ijamido Queens of Ota narrowly missed qualification.
“The Chairman’s Cup has grown into a truly inclusive tournament, hosting football clubs from across Lagos and beyond during the long holidays.”
One of the biggest highlights of Jakande’s address was the remarkable success stories recorded by former participants.
According to him, several players discovered through the tournament have progressed to represent Nigeria at different levels.
“This competition has become a veritable talent pipeline. Players scouted here have gone on to receive call-ups to the male and female national teams, including Esther Sunday of Unification, Ebube Jessica of Heartland, Timileyin Agbonjimi of Ablaze, Toheebat Niniola of AOA, and Jane of Nasarawa Amazons, among many others.”
He added that numerous players have also represented their respective states at the National Sports Festival, while six former participants featured at the prestigious Gothia World Youth Games in Sweden, with another five currently competing at the Dana Cup in Denmark.
Beyond international tournaments, many graduates of the Chairman’s Cup have earned opportunities with clubs competing in the Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), NWFL Championship, and the NWFL Premiership.
Jakande announced that all Season 6 matches will be played at the Jide Sanwo-Olu Arena, while revealing that the council recently completed another football facility known as the Renewed Hope Arena in Ayantuga.
He also highlighted other sporting initiatives undertaken by his administration, including sponsorship of the Ikeja Divisional Football Association Women’s League and the organisation of the inaugural SJ Independence Day Championship.
The chairman disclosed that this year’s football fiesta will feature 50 teams competing across 120 matches between July 27 and September 9, 2026.
“As a new government, we organized the 1st SJ Independence Day Championship… and in line with our sports festival tradition, we will host 50 teams to a 120-game fiesta between Monday, July 27 and Wednesday, September 9, 2026.”
Jakande also acknowledged journalists for their contribution to the success of previous editions, noting that media coverage has helped project the tournament beyond the local community.
“I also wish to specially acknowledge the press and media professionals. Your coverage in past editions has amplified the voices of our athletes, brought the excitement of the games to our communities, and ensured that the Chairman’s Cup remains a household name.
“As we begin Season 6, I urge you to continue in this noble role with prompt and accurate reportage of every game and every story around the tournament.”
Closing his remarks, the council boss urged players to compete with discipline, supporters to cheer responsibly, and residents to continue embracing sports as a tool for peace and development.
“To all participating teams, I say: play fair, play hard, and play with pride.
“To our fans, I say: support passionately, but respectfully. And to our community, I say: let us continue to use sports as a tool for unity, peace, and development.”
Officially declaring the competition open, Jakande said: “On behalf of the Òdì-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, I welcome you all once again and declare the Chairman’s Cup Season 6 officially open. May the best team triumph, and may the spirit of football continue to unite us.”
