The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has teamed up with the Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to address ongoing flooding issues and improve climate resilience in vulnerable areas within Lagos State.
This partnership was established on Friday when a multidisciplinary research team from FUTA met with Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, at the council’s secretariat in Iworo, Badagry.

The meeting was part of a research initiative titled “Integrating Relative Sea Level Rise into Fiscal Risk Assessment and Adaptation Investment Planning in Lagos, Nigeria: A Geospatial-Economic Approach.”
This project falls under the Raising Adaptation Impact and Ambition (RAIA) program of the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) initiative, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa.
During the discussion, both parties emphasized the escalating flooding risks in Olorunda LCDA and other regions of Lagos, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable, science-based solutions to combat rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and various climate-related challenges.

Ajose voiced his concerns regarding the recurring floods affecting numerous communities within the LCDA, characterizing climate change as an urgent issue that necessitates a unified response from governments, researchers, development partners, and local communities.
He praised FUTA for leading research initiatives that offer practical, evidence-based solutions to environmental problems and affirmed the council’s commitment to collaborating with academic institutions and relevant stakeholders to enhance climate adaptation strategies that safeguard lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
FUTA researchers outlined that the project aims to produce scientific evidence and decision-support tools to assist policymakers in making informed investments in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction throughout Lagos State.
They emphasized the necessity of collaboration with local governments to ensure effective community engagement and successful project implementation.

As part of the collaboration, Olorunda LCDA is invited to participate in a two-day Stakeholders’ Workshop for Flood-Affected Communities in Lagos State, scheduled for July 27 to 28, 2026, at the LCCI Conference and Exhibition Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
The council is expected to nominate officials from its Environmental Health Services Department and Community Development Unit to engage in discussions on institutional collaboration, technical partnerships, data needs, and evidence-based climate adaptation planning.
This visit highlighted the crucial need for enhanced cooperation between academic institutions and local governments in fostering resilient communities that can withstand the increasing effects of climate change, while also demonstrating Olorunda LCDA’s dedication to environmental sustainability, disaster readiness, and the safety of its residents.
