A five-month-old baby girl and her mother have been rescued from a canal in Lagos, just two weeks after a similar incident involving four other mothers and their children at a nearby dumpsite.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) discovered the pair during a routine clearance operation in the Abule-Ado area along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Lukman Ajayi, the agency’s spokesperson, confirmed the rescue in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Ajayi, the mother was unable to provide a clear explanation for their presence in the canal, while the infant appeared to be in poor health. Concerned for their well-being, the KAI operatives immediately moved them to a local hospital for medical attention.
“Today, our operatives rescued a mother and her five-month-old baby girl from a canal at Abule-Ado,” Ajayi stated. “The mother could not give a satisfactory answer as to why they were there, and she only said she was running from her husband, who lived in FESTAC.”

He added, “Both the mother and the child have been taken to the hospital. The child was not in a good state of health when they were rescued.”
This latest rescue highlights the ongoing issue of vulnerable mothers and children seeking shelter in hazardous locations along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. It calls for greater collaboration between environmental and social welfare agencies to identify and support at-risk families with proper shelter, healthcare, and other essential services.
This incident follows a recent rescue on August 12, when KAI operatives found four nursing mothers and their babies, including a nine-day-old infant, living at an illegal dumpsite in Agboju. The women were identified as Fareedat Muyideen, 23; Ayomide Ayomoke, 25; Amanda Oziema Abalihi, 20; and Chisom Ugo, 24.
