Tinubu vows to reduce transportation costs nationwide starting October 1

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that state governors are ready to implement immediate strategies to decrease transportation expenses across the nation by utilizing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles.

Following a meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum at the State House in Abuja, the President announced that a collaborative Federal and State committee will promptly start executing these initiatives, with the objective of allowing commuters to benefit from lower transport fares as of October 1.

“I am satisfied with my discussions with the Governors’ Forum,” Tinubu remarked. “The governors have proactively decided to take action to lower transportation costs in their states, emphasizing the advantages of using CNG and electric vehicles. We have concurred that reduced fuel prices should lead to decreased fares!”

The President underscored ongoing federal efforts through the Presidential CNG Initiative, reporting that more than 120,000 vehicles have been converted nationwide and 100,000 additional conversion kits are on the way. He also announced plans for an additional 500 CNG refueling stations, aiming for a total of 1,000 stations across the country.

“A vehicle using CNG costs 60 to 80 percent less on fuel compared to one running on petrol,” Tinubu pointed out. “Intra-state transportation is where Nigerians experience the highest costs directly, and it is within the states’ control. Starting October 1, we aim for Nigerians to enjoy the resultant savings through reduced transport fares.”
